habeas corpus practicum

Lawyers at the National Habeas Institute are also adjunct professors at Georgetown University School of Law. The Habeas Institute teaches a semester-long, 5-credit seminar to second- and third-year law students about the writ of habeas corpus. The seminar provides a broad overview of habeas law by introducing each stage of a habeas case and encourages discussion about the typical issues raised in habeas claims, such as ineffective assistance of counsel or prosecutorial misconduct. As the National Habeas Institute works to develop and disseminate the best practices of habeas law, the new standards will form the framework for the course as they describe what practitioners need to do from the beginning to the end of a habeas case.

CAPITAL HABEAS defender pipeline

Given the racial makeup of people within the U.S. criminal legal system, the National Habeas Institute is committed to training and mentoring Black students and students of color. The National Habeas Institute has a relationship with Howard University School of Law and is invested in teaching Howard students habeas corpus. The National Habeas Institute will also work to build relationships between Howard students and federal defender offices throughout the country to create opportunities for employment post-graduation.
