We take the challenging cases . . .

representation

The National Habeas Institute has a small staff and cannot take every person in need of habeas representation. But the Habeas Institute intends to exemplify the principles it espouses in its standards, and as a result, the Habeas Institute will take on some of the most challenging cases. Staff at the Habeas Institute will also work with individuals and families to attempt to locate quality representation for those individuals who the Institute cannot directly represent.

and we challenge the system to become better.

systemic reform litigation

While the National Habeas Institute represents individuals seeking relief through habeas, it will also work with strategic partners at other non-profits, law firms, and governmental agencies to reform the legal system as a whole through strategic litigation designed to challenge and highlight systemic flaws. The goal is to help an imperfect system work better so that overworked, overwhelmed, and underpaid lawyers can finally give each of their individual clients the attention they deserve.
